A VOC is a volatile organic compound. This compound is a known indoor air pollutant because research suggests that concentrations of VOC’s are 10 times higher indoors as compared to outdoors. It is released into the air from solid or liquid sources. Although there are many sources, in the home such sources are paints, household cleaners, new carpet and furnishings. In an office environment such sources are permanent markers, copiers, and printers. High concentrations of VOC’s can result in adverse health concerns such as eye, nose, and throat irritations, headaches and nausea.
