How can I save fuel?

There are many ways to cut down on fuel consumption and emissions. Some seem like common sense and reasonable, routine maintenance of an automobile.Others point to driving habit changes. Here are a few of both, which have both shown to make a real difference:

Slow down – keep to or below the speed limit, whenever practical. The gas pedal is called that for a reason. No need to race up to a red light.Easing up on the gas can save a mile-per-gallon.

Don't idle for more than 10 seconds – there is an idea kept in American driver's minds that it takes more fuel to start a car than to keep it running. This may have been true 20+ years ago, but today's engines are created differently, and can save fuel when turned off for longer than 10 seconds.

Tune-up – keep your car in good running order (oil changes, air filter maintenance, tire pressure, etc.); a monthly check list, easily done at home can help keep your car running smoothly and effectively.

Clean out the trunk – extra weight slows your car down; remove excess carriage to improve performance.Every little helps!

Don't drive – consider consolidating trips, and avoid quick outings for just one item.

CNN has provided an article on fuel-saving myths and then responded to skeptics with a follow-up article in 2008.
