The packet should explain diabetes, how it is treated, your child’s specific treatment, and how to recognize hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)/ hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Set up a meeting to go over the packet of information with those involved. At this time also discuss a treatment plan for taking care of your child’s diabetes during and after school.
It needs to be understood by the educators that your child has the right to do whatever he needs to do to take care of his diabetes at school. If that means eating in class, or not having to wait until after class to test his blood then it is up to the school to make concessions for the health of your child. Also, be sure your child knows his rights at school. Along with their rights to treat their diabetes, they have the right to do whatever kids without diabetes do at school: play a sport, join a club or take part in physical activities.
