I’ve seen people sprouting avocado seeds on their windowsills. How do I do this and will this grow into a tree with fruit?

It’s fun to grow plants from seed. Remember, however, that avocado trees grown from seed will take 8-10 years to produce fruit, while those professionally grafted onto rootstocks will yield fruit within 2-3 years. Also, seed grown trees may not produce the most desirable fruit.

  • First, wash the avocado pit.
  • Next, stick in 3 toothpicks in a circle 2/3 of the way down from the pointed top.
  • With the narrowest part of the seed pointing up, set this on the rim of a glass with water so that the bottom 1/3 of the seed is covered.
  • Set the glass on a bright or sunny windowsill.
  • After the root has formed and the top starts to split, pot the seed in soil to cover the new roots and
  • place it in the brightest light indoors or a protected outdoor spot.
This newly sprouted plant can eventually be planted in your yard and will grow into a fruit-producing tree.
