Why do my choices in seafood matter and how can I make a difference?

blue-eco label.pngWorldwide, the demand for seafood is increasing yet many of the sportsfish we enjoy eating such as grouper, swordfish, and pompano are overfished. With more than 75% of world fish stocks reported as already fully exploited or overexploited, the maximum wild- capture fisheries potential from the world’s oceans has probably been reached. In the U.S., we import 80% of our seafood to meet this demand. Too often a result of this demand is not only overfishing but also destructive fish farming (aquaculture) practices.

By purchasing fish caught or farmed using environmentally friendly practices, you are supporting healthy, abundant oceans for our generation and generations that follow. When you buy seafood in the store or in a restaurant, ask where your seafood comes from and whether it was farmed or wild-caught. Tell your friends about Seafood Watch and look for Marine Stewardship Council blue eco-label in stores and restaurants.
