The majority of spider species found in Florida are not poisonous to people. Spiders are beneficial in that they feed on many kinds of insects.
The huntsman spider is one of the largest spiders commonly encountered in homes in our area, with a body about one inch long and a leg span of up to 5 inches. It does not build a web but instead catches the insects it feeds on by chasing them down. Huntsman spiders rarely bite people unless they are carelessly handled. If their presence can be tolerated, they are beneficial indoors in that they feed largely on cockroaches. More information about the huntsman spider can be found here: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/in317
Several products that can be used to help control spiders indoors are available to homeowners.
