What is the Ochs 4-H Educational Center?

The 4-H Ochs Educational Center is a 10 acre plot of land donated by Chester Ochs (pronounced oaks). Here youth from around Pinellas County can participate in hands-on learning experiences about the conservation of natural resources. There are three areas in which these experiences take place.
  • First is the vegetable garden. Every September and February youth can learn how to plant and grow seeds and transplants. In addition, they learn the importance of irrigation and water conservation.
  • Next is the restoration area. Before the Ochs contained a citrus grove, it was a low sandhill ecosystem covered with longleaf pines, sabal palms, wiregrass, and pignut hickory. We have restored and continue to maintain, a portion of this ecosystem. Participation in this area provides service learning opportunities for 4-H members, scouts, and adult volunteers.
  • The final area is the citrus grove. The citrus grove represents the grove that once covered the property. During the months the citrus fruit is ripe, neighbors are welcome to harvest the fruit for their enjoyment, per Chester Ochs’ wishes.
